To some degree, I think he believed that the rich were already enjoying their Heaven so it was a fair trade. What always bothered me was not that Jayme had a great, big heart with a few blind spots but rather that Jayme never recognized that by refusing to allow the poor to have a free will he was refusing to see their humanity. Jayme was perpetuating that which he despised. He was becoming “the rich.”

This incessant need to polarize all persons into contrasting sides of the same plight — villain or victim is not known to Jayme alone. It’s certainly a hallmark of our modern times, on which I’ve written before.
